Something that people all over the world currently have in common is that a lot of us are now working from home! You might eventually be going back to the office, or you may permanently be based in your spare room, either way, we’ve curated a list of the 5 most important things we believe you should consider if you’re a home worker. This post works on the idea that you are a 9-5 office worker, but please adjust as you see fit. We’re all in this together, so why not help each other out and pass on a bit of advice?
So you may be reading this if your job is based at home, or you have become a home worker since the COVID 19 lockdown. Either way, having a designated workspace that you can close the door on after you’ve finished for the day is important.
The first few weeks we definitely got ourselves into a routine of just setting up on the sofa with the television going on in the background, but after a while, your back starts to hurt, you can’t get motivated and you definitely can’t shut off from work!
So, now may be the time to sort out the area under the stairs that you have always meant to do, but never had the time. Or sort out a corner in your bedroom, spare room, living room or kitchen. Have a little wander around and find a space you can dedicate to work and fix it up.
Desks can be expensive, but it might be a good idea to look on places such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree, or even see if you can get your hands on one from family or friends. Once you’ve got your little working space, you can turn off your computer, shut your books and walk away from it at the end of the day. That’s what’s important.
Having a routine is so important. Once repeated a few times, it’ll become a habit. The night before work, set your alarm, get yourself an outfit laid out and have your workspace nice and tidy. Like you would if you were going into an office, it’s important to have a bit of time to get yourself ready in the morning and to establish those boundaries. This will improve your mindset and get yourself ready for the day ahead. Write out your to-do list for the day, and turn off your computer at the time you are supposed to finish work. Too many people stay online a little bit longer as they have extra time to do so. Try not to fall into that habit!
It's important to remember that when you are in an office environment or you work out and above, you often have breaks away from your desk or work commitments to grab a tea or coffee, stop and talk to your colleagues or go for a quick walk. Just because you are at home, it doesn’t mean you should sit still for 8-12 hours a day. Make sure to get up and about every hour or so. This can spark creativity and get the blood flowing.
It’s also important to note your usual habits around lunch - if usually you’d bring leftovers from dinner the night before to work, try to continue this habit by leaving some leftovers in the fridge. You really don’t want to be spending your lunch break making food and then taking it to your desk, just grab and go from the fridge!
Even if you’re in a house full of people, working from home can be quite lonely. For most people, work is a nice escape to see friends and colleagues. Make sure you’re talking to your colleagues regularly, asking about each other’s evenings and offering help where you can. Video calls are a great way to break up your day and see some familiar faces!
Using travel time
Now, this is entirely flexible to the person you are. The time you would normally spend in the morning/evening going to and from work is now your personal time! Whether you want to squeeze in a workout before work, or sit and watch a bit of your favourite programme with a cup of tea or have a little bit of a lie in – using this time for you is a great way to positively impact your day. Taking the extra 20 minutes to get changed into something comfortable for the day, getting yourself some breakfast and not having to think about work for a little bit longer does wonders for the mind.
This is the best section (in our opinion). What we wear when we’re working from home is very customisable. For us, we like getting out of our pyjamas and popping on some loungewear for the day. Removing ourselves from the clothes that we associate with sleeping and resting to ensure we don’t fall into a slump. We have a great women’s loungewear and men’s loungewear selection! You may be the type of person who wants to wear a shirt on top to look professional in video calls, but actually you’ve got on a pair of jogging bottoms. Some people prefer to get into clothes they would wear in an office environment to get their head in the game, some prefer to be comfy. You do you.
