Work Out at Home

20/02/2017

That's it. Christmas is over and it's fair to say most of us have packed on a good few pounds between the roast dinners, mulled wine and TV binges. And why shouldn't we enjoy this well-earned indulgence? The only downside is many of us end up feeling slightly bloated after the holiday season. But don't despair and accept your new found excess kilograms, now is the time to get motivated and kick those extra pounds to the kerb! You don't need an expensive gym membership to get fit, there are plenty of ways to get yourself in shape at home. Read on to find out how...

FINDING THE TIME

The number one barrier to working out is finding the time. If you have a full time job, kids and other hobbies, how on earth can you be expected to fit in exercise too? Well one good compromise could be to engage in some short burst work outs. Even 10 to 15 minutes of exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on your health, and the more you do, the more improvements you will notice! Waking up earlier and doing some exercise is a good way of fitting work outs in around tight schedules.

EXERCISES

Squats - Squats are one of the best home work outs you can do, exercising your legs, stomach and muscles all over your body.

Push-Ups - Push-ups are another great, all round exercise that puts your chest, shoulders and arms to work.

Crunches - Crunches are the perfect move to whip your stomach into shape.

Lunges - Lunges are an easy and essential exercise to tone up your legs and thighs.

RUNNING

While you do technically have to leave the house, running is one of the best and most convenient methods of exercise. Aside from just burning fat, running has a tone of health benefits like improving your stamina, strengthening muscles and bones and increasing brain function. Try and fit in a couple of runs a week. You could even fit them in by running to/from work or the shops!

KEEP A CONSISTENT ROUTINE

Even if you're doing half an hour of exercise a day, the key to seeing results is keeping to a strict routine and not allowing yourself to lapse. Try and schedule in one or two times a day when you can exercise. If you're running on a treadmill why not watch an episode of your favourite TV show every time you go running?

INVOLVE A BUDDY

One effective method of motivating yourself to work out more is the "buddy system". If you have a friend or relative that also wants to get healthier then working out can be a way of spending social time and strengthening your bond. You may also find there is an element of friendly competition which will increase your motivation.

IMPROVE YOUR DIET

Christmas is the time of year to indulge in delicious food and that's totally fine. But once the holiday season is over and the New Year begins, it's time to start improving your diet. Cutting out fatty foods and eating more fruit and veg is a must. Try to swap processed meats for fish and low fat meat like grilled chicken.
