2020. What a year its already been and we’re only 7 months in!
COVID-19 has pretty much-ruined everyone’s summer plans. Whether you had a holiday booked abroad, you were going travelling or just had plans to be in the pub garden with your friends and family, it's all disappeared. So, we can either mope about not lying next to the pool with unlimited drinks and snacks or we can make the most of what we’ve got.
Get your shorts, swimming costume and sunglasses on; it’s time for a break! There are so many options for how you can kick back and relax in the comfort of your own home or garden, or make use of the great outdoors.
Set yourself a date when it’s nice and sunny (we’re hoping this British summer is a warm one!), pack yourself a luxury picnic with all your favourite holiday snacks and take yourself to your garden or your favourite spot in the local park - socially distanced of course. If you have a paddling pool, pop that up too - it’ll add to the vibe.
If you don’t have any of these available or want more options, try turning your living room into a holiday haven. It’s not ideal, but we’re making the most of what we have. Put out some nice glasses, a selection of drinks and decorate your space accordingly.
Eat, drink, laugh and enjoy!
Pick some of your meals and treats from your favourite country or restaurant and find recipes to replicate them. The internet is your oyster!
Once you’ve got your recipes, plan the meals into your schedule and get some decorations ready. For instance, Monday is Greek night: get your Greek salad, mezze platter, blue decor and go all out.
Is it Italian night on Friday? Set up some traditional music, create some Italian flags, throw on a red skirt or waistcoat and you’re good to go!
Now, you’re probably just as bored as we are when it comes to writing quizzes but hear us out.
Mix it up. Get a group of friends together, set a time, and choose a platform - Zoom and Google Meet are ours. Each person or team is in charge of a round each, with questions covering their favourite topic. 6 teams, all with 10 questions each? Sorted.
Scavenger hunt? Create a list of riddles for items that everyone has in their homes, the first to come back to the video call with the item gets the point. The harder the riddle, the longer the game.
Whether you have a garden or have access to some sort of outside space, use it to the best of your ability and get creative. You could purchase tennis rackets, bubbles, boules or water guns, the possibilities for garden games are endless.
Or, get yourself some jumbo chalks and paintbrushes and go to town with decorating paving stones and fences. It’ll keep the kids busy, and give you a moment to enjoy some much-needed snacks and rest.
So, make the most of what you’ve got. Ask around and see what others are doing, take inspiration from your surroundings and have a great summer!
