Brand Guide: Converse

When it comes to footwear you can't get much more iconic than a good old pair of Chuck Taylors. Converse are arguably the most recognizable hi-tops in the world.

It was way back in 1908 when the Converse Rubber Shoe Company was founded by Marquis Mills Converse in Malden, Massachusetts. In 1917 the All Star was designed, composed of a rubber sole & canvas upper and was defined as a top-tier basketball shoe. The original Converse All Star had a very similar silhouette to the High Top style we all know and love today.

The All Stars didn’t take off until 1921 when basketball player Charles "Chuck" Taylor signed to basketball team The Converse All Stars, a team sponsored by the shoes company. Taylor travelled around the US teaching basketball and selling the shoes. Taylor was so passionate about the brand he worked with the company to improve the shoe. It was during this period that the All Stars earned the nickname "Chuck Taylors". Converse became popular with basketball players and athletes alike, a special design was even created for the 1936 Olympics which instantly became popular. All Stars even became the official shoe of the United States Army as Chuck Taylor served in the US Air Force whilst coaching the All Star basketball team. In 1949 the classic black high tops were created.

As the company grew, so did its audience. With more factories opening across the United States, Converse were able to keep up with the ever growing demand for their shoes. By this point 90% of college and professional basketball players were sporting the iconic trainer and they were starting to be adopted by various subcultures as footwear of choice. As the years went on, Converse developed from an elite sports shoe to a casual footwear staple, favoured by rock bands including The Ramones, Nirvana, Green Day and Fall Out Boy.
